European Day of Languages Focuses On Multiculturalism
The European Day of Languages this year focused on multilingualism and multiculturalism. The ten European language institutions of Culture discussed a strategy to improve the overall level of languages. The highlights of the event were the benefits that small business can obtain from improving language skills as the European Commissioner for Education, Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou pointed out:
“Europeans are increasingly aware of the difference that foreign language skills can make in their lives. As well as being a practical asset for an individual’s personal development, languages mean more business for companies, giving them a competitive edge and opening up export markets. Improving the overall level of language skills in Europe will also contribute to our Europe 2020 strategy for smart and inclusive growth and multilingualism is a crucial part of our flagship initiatives Youth on the Move and the Agenda for New Skills and Jobs.”
The European Day of Languages was launched in 2001 to celebrate this diversity and to highlight the importance of languages in our private and professional lives.
The European Commission has proposed funding opportunities for organizations working on languages training and promotion in order to enhance the international competitiveness of European Union economies.
